Navy contractors need CMMC evidence. Genomics labs need to know who touched which dataset.

San Diego defense suppliers are starting to see CMMC clauses in their contracts, and many still run on a few shared admin accounts and a file server full of CUI. Up the coast, research teams move sequencing and trial data between lab instruments, cloud notebooks and outside collaborators.

in short·20-second read

In San Diego we work with defense contractors, cyber firms and life science companies.

For defense work that means scoping the CUI enclave, MFA and privileged access controls mapped to NIST SP 800-171, and evidence an assessor can follow. For research organizations it means governed data platforms and access tied to each study. We're based in Frisco, Texas, serve San Diego organizations remotely and come out for workshops and launches.

Cohash's only US office is in Frisco, Texas, and we have no San Diego presence. We support San Diego teams remotely and travel in for scoping workshops, assessment readiness reviews and cutover weekends.

Who we work with in San Diego, and the rules they work under

industries
  1. Defense primes and subcontractors

Shipyard suppliers, C4ISR integrators and engineering services firms hold CUI in email, CAD files and shared drives. We find where it actually lives, draw the enclave boundary tight, then add phishing-resistant MFA, vaulted admin accounts and access reviews that map to the 110 requirements in NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2.

  2. Defense tech and cyber startups

Venture-backed defense firms can grow from a dozen engineers to several hundred in a couple of years, often on commercial Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Moving CUI into a government cloud tenant is far easier before headcount triples, so we plan that move identity first, with separate tenants, conditional access and device compliance.

  3. Life sciences and genomics

Sequencing output, trial data and electronic lab notebooks sit with CROs, academic partners and cloud analytics tools. We set up study-level access, retire accounts when a collaboration ends and keep audit trails that hold up under FDA's Part 11 rules for electronic records.

regulations
  1. CMMC program, 32 CFR part 170 and DFARS clause ↗

The program rule took effect 16 December 2024 and the DFARS contract rule on 10 November 2025. For the first three years contracting officers apply CMMC requirements selectively. After that, contracts where contractor systems process FCI or CUI generally carry the clause.

  2. California Civil Code §1798.82 ↗

San Diego companies holding Californians' data have 30 calendar days from discovery to notify affected residents under the 2026 amendments, and send the Attorney General a sample notice within 15 days after notifying more than 500 people. A delay requested by law enforcement is still allowed.

  3. CCPA and the CalPrivacy 2026 regulations ↗

Applies to for-profit businesses that meet its thresholds, so a defense contractor's commercial and HR data can fall under it. The 2026 regulations require risk assessments for higher-risk processing such as sensitive personal information, a category that includes genetic data.

01How small can our CMMC Level 2 enclave be?

As small as the CUI allows. If CUI only appears in one program's drawings and email, we can often limit the enclave to that team's accounts, devices and storage, which cuts both cost and assessment scope. The risk is CUI leaking outside it, so we pair the enclave with data loss rules on the rest of the network.

02Do we need a government cloud tenant for CUI?

Not always, but if you handle CUI with export-control markings or your contract requires FedRAMP Moderate equivalent services, a government cloud offering is usually the practical choice. We help compare options and run the identity and mailbox migration.

03Can you help a genomics company meet Part 11 audit trail expectations?

We set up unique user accounts, time-stamped audit trails and electronic signature controls in the identity layer and data platform. System validation and quality procedures stay with your QA team, and we provide the configuration evidence they need.

04Does CCPA apply to genetic data from research participants?

It can, depending on whether you're a covered business and whether the data falls under research or HIPAA exemptions. Genetic data counts as sensitive personal information under the statute, so ask counsel early and map where it flows before you build new analytics on it.
