One metro, two state breach laws, and a lot of back-office systems that move other people's money and records.
A Kansas City company can have its data center in Missouri, its call center in Kansas and customers in all fifty states. Banks, fund administrators, health IT shops and freight firms here run back offices built over decades. Access questions start with batch jobs and service accounts nobody has checked in years.

What's specific about Kansas City
Each figure comes from a public source, linked on the card.
Trade, transportation and utilities is the Kansas City MO-KS metro's biggest supersector, with about 229,100 of roughly 1,175,300 nonfarm jobs in September 2026 on preliminary BLS numbers. Education and health services had 183,700 and professional and business services 182,700.

-
Banking, payments and fund servicing
Regional banks, card processors and mutual fund transfer agents run nightly batch cycles across mainframes, file transfer servers and newer cloud services. Each hop carries a service account or an SFTP key. We inventory those credentials, give each an owner, move secrets into a vault and plan the batch modernization so the controls survive the move.
-
Health IT and hospital systems
Software teams building clinical systems and the hospitals running them both handle protected health information, often through support access granted for one ticket and never pulled back. We put vendor and support access behind approval and time limits, and trace which integration feeds copy patient data to which downstream system.
-
Logistics, rail and distribution
Warehouses and carriers along the I-35 and I-70 corridors staff seasonal crews on shared scanners and terminals. Contractor accounts multiply around peak season. We set up frontline sign-in that works on shared devices and automate removal of seasonal accounts when the contract ends.
-
Animal health and federal manufacturing
Animal health makers handle regulated research and manufacturing data, and suppliers to the federal campus in south Kansas City handle controlled technical information. Both need plant networks kept apart from office IT. We map access paths into production and lab systems and put remote vendor sessions behind a recorded gateway.
-
Missouri breach notification, RSMo §407.1500 ↗
Residents are told without unreasonable delay, and the AG plus national credit bureaus hear about any notice to more than 1,000 people at once. A no-harm decision has to be documented and kept five years. The Attorney General alone enforces it, with civil penalties up to $150,000 per breach.
-
Kansas breach notification, K.S.A. 50-7a02 ↗
After a prompt good-faith investigation, notify affected Kansans as soon as possible if misuse occurred or is reasonably likely. Notices to more than 1,000 consumers at once must also go to the nationwide credit bureaus. The Attorney General enforces, except for licensed insurers, where the insurance commissioner has sole authority.
-
Missouri Insurance Data Security Act, RSMo §375.1410 ↗
Since 1 January 2026, licensees must tell the Director within four business days after determining a qualifying cybersecurity event. That covers Missouri-domiciled insurers and other licensees whose event involves 250 or more Missouri consumers under the statute's conditions.

01Our offices are in Overland Park but our servers are in Missouri. Which breach law applies?
Both can. Breach statutes follow the residents whose data was exposed, not where your servers sit. Kansas and Missouri both bring in the credit bureaus above 1,000 notices, but only Missouri also requires notice to its Attorney General at that size. Most metro companies plan for both plus every other state where they have customers. Confirm the plan with counsel.
02We still run COBOL batch for fund or card processing. Can you modernize without breaking controls?
Yes. We document every job, file transfer and credential the batch cycle depends on before anything moves, then rebuild schedules and secrets handling on the target platform. Auditors usually want the old and new control maps side by side, so we produce both.
03Do Missouri or Kansas have a general consumer privacy law?
Missouri has not enacted a comprehensive consumer privacy act as of 2026. For Kansas, check the current session with counsel before relying on that. Customers in states that have one, such as Texas, Colorado or Minnesota, still bring their rules with them.
04Can you work with suppliers to the National Security Campus?
We help suppliers with identity, privileged access and segmentation of their own corporate and plant systems. We don't touch classified systems, and any flow-down security requirements in your contract stay the deciding document.
